Morton/Moreton

Name origin: From parish Morton, in Nithsdale, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. From Gaelic mor, big, great; and dun or ton, a hill. The earliest records of the family is in Dauphine, France, where the Comtes and Marquieses Morton de Chabrillon occupied many important positions. In Battle Abbey Roll and Doomesday Book appears the name of Robert, Comte de Mortain, half-brother of William the Conqueror, who became founder of the English family.
