Notes from Gen. Dic. of ME & NH, by Noyes, page 128: "CARLE, forename, from Carolus. CARLE, Richard. One Richard partook in an eloping party in 1650, (see Geo. Way) In Dover in 1655 R.C. had occasion to promise not to sleep in the house of John Bursley's wife, Susannah (Wyeth), unless another woman slept with her. If Em = Amie, he peph m.her sister Em Wyeth, stepdau. of Samuel Greenfield. His wife was Amie in 1682, with a d. Amie m. to Samuel Knight. Taxed in Dover 1657. Lists 356ab. Living in Spruce Creek, Kit., bef.1622, later on 15 a. gr. in Great Bay, Eliot, which he sold off, 1676, 1682, 1693. + or - 70 in 1697.

From York Deeds, Vol. IV, p.167: Know all men by these presents, that I Richard Kirle of Kittery in the County of Yorke, as well for my natural affection & parental Love w[hich] I bear to my well beloved Son in law, Samuel Knight of s[ame] Town & County, as also for diverse others good Causes & Conditions, me at present especially moving, have freely given & granted to sd Samuell Knight, Six Acres of Land being part of a Towne Grant of fiveteen Acres of Land, lying and being in Kittery, gd Knight Part shall begin at the Great Cove, & so run sixty eight Pole to the Land, which is now Rimmicks Land, and such breadth, as makes up the forementioned Summ of Acres -- To have & to hold, all & singular the gd six Acres of Land to gd Knight, his Heires, Executors, Administrators, & Assignes forever to thier own proper Use & Behoof, freely and Quietly without any matter of Challenge or claim, or demand, of me the gd Kirle, or of any other person or persons w'soever for me, in my name, by my cause, means, or procurement, and without any money or other thing to be yielded or paid, unto me sdKirle, my Heires, Executor or Assigneds. And I said Kirle all the sdLand to the sd Knight his Heires, Executors, Administrators, & Assignes, to the use aforesaid against all People doth warrent I defend by these presents, and further Know that the sd Kirle, hathput sd Knight in peaceable and Quiet Possession of the said Land, at the delivering & sealing of the presents, as witnesse my hand Seale this twenty seventh day of July on thousand, six hund. & seventy six
